Occupational Therapy - Transpersonal Counselling - Career Development
I studied occupational therapy at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
I started my career as an Occupational Therapist in paediatric private practice, working with children with disabilities, learning and behavioral problems, sensory processing disorders and developmental delays.
Mothers & Miracles involves a structured, interactive early learning program for children between 3 months and 3 years, in the areas of: Intellectual stimulation (cognitive, language, creativity and perceptual), Physical (fine and gross motor), Emotional and Social development and Baby massage. I ran weekly workshops for 8 and a half years and organized First Aid courses, outings and talks on relevant topics. I was also a director and shareholder of Mothers & Miracles, participated in the day to day running of the business and training of new franchisees.
The ‘Mind over Fatter’ concept is a non-diet alternative to losing weight by addressing the client’s emotional issues around eating, body image, exercise and enthusiasm for life. I hosted structured weekly support groups where clients could look into their own lives to resolve the issues that lead to unhealthy eating patterns. The program focused on helping clients make healthy food choices, encouraging them to engage in healthy exercise/‘body fun’ and developing a healthy relationship with their own bodies. Techniques such as mindful eating, journaling, visualization, relaxation and body awareness exercises complemented the program.
The course covered topics such as: Family dynamics, Group facilitation, Counseling skills, Inner child healing, Life purpose alignment, Metaphysiology of the brain, Astrology, Numerology, Personal and Social transformation, Writing as a tool for personal growth, Meditation and Visualization.
My family and I decided to immigrate to Australia and we arrived in Melbourne in August 2008.
Transpersonal counselling is about looking at a client holistically, integrating body, mind and spirit. It developed from earlier schools of psychology, including psychoanalysis, behaviorism and humanistic psychology and integrates the experience of mysticism with modern psychological theory.
I worked as a contractor and provided assessment and interventions to support children and families with a range of diagnoses, e.g. developmental delays, sensory processing issues, autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit disorder (ADD / ADHD) etc.
ACT is a unique and creative model for both therapy and coaching, based on the innovative use of mindfulness and values. The aim is to maximize human potential for a rich, full and meaningful life; to cultivate health, vitality and well-being through mindful values-based living.
